Backfilling doesn’t simply mean returning the excavated soil back into an exposed cavity. It involves utilizing approved backfill and bedding material at standardized thicknesses for proper drainage and erosion prevention, and to provide special care when compacting the soil so as not to damage piping, cabling or shoring, crib, cofferdam, or caisson equipment. Subgrade soil for all concrete structures is assured to be firm, dense, consolidated and thoroughly compacted.
